This Caramelized Onion & Mushroom Salisbury Steak is a comforting and flavorful meal featuring ground beef, garlic, and thyme, complemented by a rich gravy made with caramelized onions and mushrooms. Perfect for gluten-free and dairy-free diets, this dish is sure to become a favorite.
Heat ¼ cup olive oil in a pan over medium heat to caramelize onions. Add onions, reduce heat to medium low, cover and let cook for 15 minutes.
Remove the lid and continue cooking, stirring periodically, to prevent onions from browning too quickly until they are light golden, about 30 minutes. Remove from pan and set aside.
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, panko, egg, minced garlic, worcestershire, ketchup, salt, and onion powder, and mix well.
Divide meat mixture into four balls and form each ball into a 1 inch thick patty.
Increase temperature to medium and add patties into the pan. Brown on both sides, about 5 minutes per side, then remove from pan and set aside.
Add sliced mushrooms to the pan with the steak fat and sauté until browned, about 10 minutes.
While mushrooms cook, whisk flour and a splash of bone broth in a small bowl to create a slurry.
Add caramelized onions, thyme, bone broth, flour slurry, worcestershire, and a pinch of salt and pepper to the pan, whisking well.
Return steaks to the pan and continue cooking in the sauce until thickened to your desired consistency, about 5 minutes.
